This Beloved David Bowie Track is Jude Law’s Go-To Karaoke Song

Today saw the new film Vox Lux open in theaters. Directed by Brady Corbet and starring Natalie Portman, Jude Law and Raffey Cassidy (as both a younger version of Natalie Portman’s character and the same character’s daughter), the film follows Celeste, an internationally famous pop star, on her crazy journey from suburban New York teen to tabloid-fodder celebrity. During a screening of the film held earlier this week, we learned which tracks are Natalie Portman and Jude Law karaoke go-to songs.

Karaoke was a fitting topic following the screening, considering Vox Lux is all about the ups-and-downs and superficiality of the recording industry, and the finale sees Natalie Portman’s Celeste character in action onstage as one of the world’s biggest pop stars — choreography and all. (And those outfits!)

The cast of ‘Vox Lux’: Raffey Cassidy, Natalie Portman, Jude Law

It was actually Jude Law who asked co-star Natalie Portman about her favorite karaoke song, and Portman wasted no time offering up “Milkshake” by Kelis as her go-to track when hitting up a karaoke bar in L.A.’s Koreatown neighborhood.

“My milkshake brings all the boys to the yard,” she says, offering that maybe one day she and Jude Law could go enjoy some Koreatown karaoke together.

When the panel discussion’s moderator asked about the still-elusive Jude Law karaoke go-to, the actor also had one in his back pocket.

“‘Heroes.’ David Bowie,” the actor replies, followed by a “Damn right.”

After offering up his karaoke choice, which was met with a hush over the crowd, Portman jokes, “Everyone just swooned! Did you hear that? … [Everyone’s like] can I be there when you sing ‘Heroes’? Please?”

The David Bowie track “Heroes,” from the 1977 album of the same name, has been covered by artists including Oasis, The Wallflowers, Depeche Mode and Coldplay. In 2014, NME named the track the 14th best song of all time.

As for Raffey Cassidy, the film’s 16-year-old ingenue who also appeared in The Killing of a Sacred Deer, her karaoke go-to is “99 Problems” by Jay-Z.
