Seeking Better Sex? Talking With Your Partner About Money Could Help

“Talk dirty to me” takes on a whole new meaning when you learn that conversing about money with your partner makes for a stronger relationship, a better sex life and more happiness. A recent Honeyfi/Debt Free Guys survey of LGBT couples revealed surprising correlations between the quality of our sex lives and how we talk with our partners about money. Do you talk about money with your partner?

Honeyfi is a budget app that helps couples better manage their money together. (Though you can go solo with Honeyfi, too.) So as the Debt Free Guys we partnered with them to learn more about LGBT couples and their money behaviors.

Here’s some of what we’ve found.

1. LGBTQ couples who track and discuss their budget are more likely to be “extremely happy.”

If you track and discuss a shared budget, you’re 81% more likely to report being “extremely happy” in your relationship. When you have often uncomfortable conversations about money — something many of us avoid outright — you actually come out feeling better about your finances and closer to your partner.

2. LGBTQ couples who track and discuss their budget are more likely to report having a great sex life.

Having that support system and structure of someone else to speak with about your goals and your problems is crucial, especially with a taboo topic like money. If you track and discuss a shared budget, you’re 54% more likely to report having a great sex life. Better sex often leads to more intimate relationships.

2. LGBTQ couples who divide and conquer their money management are less likely to fight about money.

When you keep your finances separate, it’s hard to work together toward mutual and individual goals. Our survey showed that 61% of queer couples who split financial duties evenly reported being “extremely happy.”

So talk about money with your partner. Opening the lines of communication about your finances is a great first step for partners to become a team with their money — and better sex is just an added bonus.
