Don’t Be Dumb at Brunch: Getting Dissed at Work and Homophobic Nonsense From Eminem

Happy Sunday! Hungry for brunch? Hungry for knowledge? This week, we bring you stories about getting dissed at work, the art of discrimination, a dinner spiced with hate and the real shade of Slim Shady. Of course, we have our Whack Job of the Week — but he’ll be dead soon. See who it is below.

Here are the week’s 5 news stories that’ll keep you looking well-informed at brunch:

1. Dissed at Work? You May Be Out of Luck

The LGBTQ+ community can still be fired in the majority of states in the USA just for how they identify. Imagine living and working in one of those states and having a legit workplace discrimination complaint. Do you file the complaint? If you do, the numbers show your case is most likely to be dismissed.

In 2017, roughly 64% of these cases were let go. Surprisingly Washington D.C. comes in at the top of the list in recorded LGBTQ+ complaints. But under the Trump administration, we wonder just how many people feel comfortable coming forward about discrimination in the workplace for fear of being fired.

2. The Art of Discrimination

Is it political, unprofessional and pushing an ideology to simply acknowledge your partner while at work? Paul Holding, a parent whose daughter was taking an art class from a lesbian teacher, believes it is. Holding reported Stacy Bailey, an art teacher at Charlotte Anderson Elementary School in Arlington, Texas, for showing students pictures of her parents, her friends and her fiancée — a woman. Other slides detailed class rules, rewards and expectations for the year.

Bailey was suspended for the remainder of the school year. She’s now suing the Mansfield Independent School District for discrimination. Here’s the real question: If Paul Holding’s daughter came home and said the same exact thing about the slide show but instead of her gay relationship Bailey showed a slide of her and husband would she be enduring the same treatment from the school and school board? Yep. Didn’t think so.

3. Slim Super-Shady?

Eminem: Love him or hate him, he’s delivered some catchy tunes and simultaneously pissed a lot of people off. On his most recent album release, he called openly bi rapper Tyler the Creator a “faggot.” Tyler himself uses the word over 200 times on his 2011 album Goblin. What do you think? Is it OK for Tyler to use the word so many times because he’s gay and not for Eminem?

4. A Basket of Deplorables

The Trump administration won’t even acknowledge the LGBTQ+ community but they will absolutely honor the worst anti-LGBTQ leaders — and take selfies with them. The White House threw a dinner for a slew of Christian homophobes including notorious James Dobson (Family Research Council), Tony Perkins (FRC), Jim Garlow, Ralph Reed and wide eyed crazy Michele Bachmann. Ivanka, the so-called “friend to our community,” posed for picture with Robert Jeffress, a Baptist megachurch pastor who says all gay men want to molest kids. Way to go.

5. Whack Job of the Week: Peter Avsenew

Death becomes him. Peter Avsenew, the ex-escort convicted of first degree murder in January for the 2010 killing of a Wilton Manors couple has now been sentenced to death for his crimes. Showing no remorse he infamously flipped off the family members of the victims as they left the courtroom. He also wrote the judge a letter in which he admits to allegedly killing many more. He wrote: “It is my duty as a white man to cull the weak and timid from existence,” he wrote. “I will always stand up for what I believe in and eradicate anything in my way. Homosexuals are a disgrace to mankind and must be put down. These weren’t the first and won’t be the last.”

Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo were one of two plaintiff couples in California’s 2013 challenge of Proposition 8, which brought marriage equality back to the state after being ruled on by the U.S. Supreme Court. These activists also host the weekly podcast The Husbands. Catch them there or follow them on Instagram @JeffZandPaulK.
