Big Boys on the Dance Floor: The Bears Turned Up for the January Debut of Bearracuda L.A.

For more than a decade, one party has been particularly good at gathering a dance floor full of hairy men with a bit of extra meat on their bones. And now that same party, Bearracuda, has found a permanent L.A. home: Precinct, the “rock ‘n’ roll gay bar” of Downtown Los Angeles that is also home to such stellar SoCal parties as the Boulet Brothers‘ Queen Kong and former Drag Race Pit Crew member Shawn Morales’s “Take It Off” weekly Thursday underwear party.

“Bearracuda has been looking for a suitable dance space since we left the Echoplex [another venue in the Echo Park neighborhood of Los Angeles] years ago,” says Bearracuda founder Matt. “DTLA is hot right now, and we’ve been trying for over a year to get into Precinct. The space is perfect for us, as far as vibe, location and flow are concerned.”

The January kickoff of Bearracuda L.A. was a big hit, with Precinct seeing more than 700 people walk through the door (including dreamy Scandal star Guillermo Diaz). Austin, Texas-based drag terrorist Christeene was also present at the inaugural event.

The party was such a success — one of the bar’s most well-attended nights ever — that Bearracuda L.A. will be taking place at Precinct on the second Saturday of every month. The next installment will take place on March 10.

While it’s mostly a party for bears and those who are enamored by them, all are welcome. And the party is looking to drain your wallet either.

“We keep the cover super cheap at $5 to make it accessible for everyone and give people a guaranteed crowd every month,” Matt says.
